The Vergilian Society announces a Symposium Cumanum to be held at the Villa Vergiliana, Cumae, Italy, Tuesday, June 21 through Friday, June 24, 2011.
"Et in Arcadia Ego: Landscapes of the Early Roman Empire" The pastoral and agricultural themes of Vergil's early works and their later appearance in classical and later literature will be the focus of this symposium. We will compare the relationship between his pastoral landscapes-in the Georgics as well as in the Eclogues-not only to those of his predecessors but also to those of his contemporaries and successors in all in all the areas of human cultural activity, from agriculture and religion, to art, archaeology, literature, and music. The Vergilian Society will sponsor this symposium, to be held June 21-24, 2011.
The Conference organizers are: Patricia A. Johnston (Brandeis University), and Giovanni Casadio (University of Salerno) (giovannicasadio[at], and Sophia Papaioannou (University of Athens) (spapaioan[at] Abstracts in English or Italian (50 words or more) are required.
Abstracts are due by April 1, 2011.
