The Dead in the City

Practices, contexts and impacts of intramural burials in Anatolia, from EBA to Roman times

Appel à contributions
Date limite : 15 juin 2011

The French Institute for Anatolian Studies is organizing the second Archaeology Meetings of the IFEA, which will be held in Istanbul, November 14-15, 2011. The aim of this conference is to provide a comprehensive and diachronic overview of intramural burial practices in Anatolia from Early Bronze Age to Roman times. Recent archaeological discoveries have emphasized the importance of intramural burials as early as the 3rd millennium BC. The development of complex burial customs resulted in funerary practices to become increasingly important as means of strengthening the links inside a community. Although it seems possible to envision a direct continuity of intramural burials over this long time span, the context of burying the dead individuals within the living quarters of a settlement have radically changed through time and geographies.
This conference aims at bringing together scholars that are interested in the various aspects of urban burial practices and working on different historical periods, in order to offer an interdisciplinary and diachronic platform of discussion.

The conference welcomes researchers, including scholars at a doctoral or post-doctoral level. The presentations will necessarily be limited to 20-25 speakers, ideally divided into 15 senior and 5-10 junior scholars. Contributors are invited to give a presentation that would aim at contextualizing practices and impacts of intra-mural burial through from an archaeological, historical or textual. Participants from all nationalities working on periods from EBA to Late Antique are all cordially invited to apply. Although English is preferred, papers in Turkish, French and German are also welcome. The registration deadline is June 15th 2011.

Please indicate your name and status, email, and provide us with a title and short abstract of your contribution (max. 15 lines) for registration. Please note that the registration is free of charge. Thanks to the generosity of the institutions supporting the symposium we will most probably be able to cover most of the travel and lodging expenses of the participants.
