Il Liber illustrium virorum archisterii Casinensis fu elaborato tra il 1133 e il 1136 da Pietro Diacono, cartularius, scriniarius ac bibliothecarius di Montecassino. Charles H. Haskins definì quest'opera «un documento di cui qualsiasi istituto monastico potrebbe menar vanto», rimarcando che «più che un catalogo è un epitaffio». L'autore scrive infatti quest'opera con lo sguardo rivolto al passato cassinese, in particolare a quell'età desideriana che fu da lui definita aureum patris Desiderii saeculum, incarnata da letterati e intellettuali del calibro di Alfano, Amato, Alberico, Costantino Africano, Guaiferio, Leone Marsicano. L'intuizione del declino cui va ormai incontro il monastero cassinese, coinvolto nello scisma anacletiano, di cui egli stesso è testimone e protagonista, spinge pertanto Pietro Diacono, nel timore di un naufragio della memoria, a salvare almeno l'eredità letteraria di un passato splendido e irrinunciabile ancorché irripetibile. Il nuovo testo che qui si presenta risponde all'esigenza di superare l'insufficiente e, in molti casi, erronea edizione seicentesca curata da Giovanni Battista Mari – accolta dal Muratori nei Rerum Italicarum Scriptores e quindi dal Migne nella Patrologia Latina –, che giustamente Herbert Bloch definì «del tutto inattendibile», perché derivante non dall'autografo, il Casin. 361, ma da una cattiva copia del sec. XVII (Vat. Barb. lat. 2453). Occorreva quindi restituire dignità a un'opera che, in omaggio alla tradizione geronimiana del De viris illustribus, costituisce, come scrisse Antonio Viscardi, «il primo documento di un interesse per la storia non più solo politica e religiosa, ma anche culturale e letteraria», e «rappresenta, perciò, una cosa singolare nella storia della storiografia medievale».

La principale entreprise exégétique de Jérôme est un commentaire des prophètes, qui est resté sans concurrence en Occident pendant plusieurs siècles. Les premiers commentaires médiévaux eux-mêmes ne sont guère plus que des relectures de cette œuvre fondatrice. Avant de s'attaquer aux quatre grands prophètes, qui l'occuperont durant les dix dernières années de sa vie, Jérôme a commenté les douze petits prophètes en trois vagues successives, de 393 à 406. Le présent volume réunit un représentant de chacune d'entre elles; il permettra déjà d'observer l'évolution de la technique du commentaire chez Jérôme dans l'entre-temps. Les douze commentaires sont des ouvrages séparés, qui ont chacun leur histoire textuelle propre; même lorsqu'on les trouve réunis en un corpus unique, à partir de l'époque carolingienne, ils conservent chacun leur particularité. Le travail d'ecdotique doit donc être refait pour chacun d'eux, avant de pouvoir retracer le parcours sinueux et complexe de leur transmission, durant lequel ils se sont progressivement agrégés jusqu'à ce que l'ensemble s'en trouve finalement rassemblé.
