This multidisciplinary volume features a targeted study of the main questions relating to Roman historiography. It envisages successively the morphology, the themes and the survival of that major literary form. In point of fact historiography appears etymologically less as a science than as an art aiming to express through writing the significance of the human messages conveyed by the past. In this respect we must never lose sight of the fact that knowledge of history proves to be essential for the education as well of the citizens as of the high rulers, whose public services have to be put in perspective.
Ce volume pluridisciplinaire propose une étude ciblée des principales questions afférentes à l'historiographie romaine. Il envisage successivement la morphologie, les thématiques et la postérité d'un genre littéraire majeur. Tant il est vrai que, étymologiquement, l'historiographie se présente moins comme une science que comme un art visant à exprimer par l'écriture la signification des messages humains que contient le passé. A cet égard, on ne perdra jamais de vue que les connaissances historiques chez les Romains s'avèrent indispensables aussi bien à la formation des citoyens qu'à celle des hauts dirigeants, dont il s'agit de mettre en perspective les actions au service de l'Etat.

Né en 1526 à Limoges, Muret séjourna à Paris (1551-1553) puis s'enfuit à Toulouse via Bourges et gagna l'Italie en 1554. À Venise, il édita des textes classiques commentés grâce à Paul Manuce. Après un séjour à Padoue, il entra au service d'Hippolyte II d'Este (fin 1558-début 1559). À son retour d'un ultime séjour en France avec ce dernier (1561-1563), il s'installa définitivement à Rome. Demeurant au service des Este, il mena une carrière universitaire à La Sapienza où il enseigna la philosophie morale, le droit et la littérature latine presque jusqu'à sa mort (1585). Tout au long de son séjour italien, l'humaniste poursuivit ses activités savantes et entretint une importante correspondance tandis que ne cessait de croître sa réputation d'orateur. Ce volume réunit vingt-cinq contributions qui fournissent un éclairage neuf sur la bibliothèque de Muret, son activité de professeur et de philologue, ses liens avec d'autres humanistes et avec les milieux artistiques.
