Consentius probably lived in Gaul in the fifth century. His Ars de barbarismis et metaplasmis is the most extensive ancient treatise on deviations from 'standard' Latin, both errors (barbarisms) and poetic licenses (metaplasms). This volume provides the first English translation in a new critical edition, which benefits from new evidence on its textual transmission. Error and poetic license were long-standing topics of Greek and Roman reflections on language, and by late antiquity were rigidly codified in Roman grammar. Consentius' discussion of poetic license is fairly traditional, though he adds an original appendix on licence that are involved in verse scansion. His discussion of error is more original, as he criticised mainstream grammarians who took their examples of error from poetry, and instead took examples of errors from spoken language. By doing so, Consentius provides us with an unparalleled insight into spoken Latin: his list of errors has been analysed over the years by students of non-standard and regional Latin as well as the Romance languages, and his comments on vowel quantity and quality, the accent, and the sound of certain consonants are still the subject of much scholarly debate. Mari's commentary explains the textual choices made in the edition and the linguistic and interpretive difficulties of the text, reconstructs the place of Consentius' doctrine within the ancient grammatical tradition, and illustrates the linguistic information provided by Consentius from the point of view of historical linguistics.

In a number of codices, the interpretation of Psalm 61 (the last text in the Explanatio psalmorum XII, ed. M. Petschenig) has been transmitted together with the two "emperor speeches" as De obitu Gratiani. This volume thus also provides a new edition of this text with an extensive introduction.

Together with "Critical Notes on Virgil" (De Gruyter 2016), this volume offers an enlightening complement to the critical text of the Georgics and the Aeneid recently published in the Bibliotheca Teubneriana. In "Virgilian Parerga: Textual Criticism and Stylistic Analysis" can be seen the progress owed to the insight of four of the finest scholars of the past (Heinsius, Heyne, Ribbeck and Sabbadini). The first chapters trace the steps of the arduous path that from the middle of the 17th century on led these outstanding erudites to free themselves from the uulgata and compose a new critical text for the works of Virgil. The later chapters tackle important questions of textual criticism and Virgilian style, and propose new answers to inveterate exegetic problems. The volume ends with an interesting theoretical discussion on the methodological principles that combine the rules of philology with those of law. Here the author questions the logical assumptions that dominate not only the philological process but also the judicial one.

Ce volume rassemble des contributions autour de la figure d'Irénée de Lyon (vers 130-vers 200), auteur chrétien originaire d'Asie mineure, de langue et de culture grecques, qui a passé la seconde partie de sa vie « chez le Celtes », « dans les régions voisines du Rhône », pour reprendre ses propres expressions. Il est probable que la route d'Irénée de l'Orient vers l'Occident se soit trouvée coupée par une étape à Rome ; c'est pourquoi les études de ce volume sont regroupées en trois parties correspondant à ces trois zones géographiques – l'Asie, Rome, la Gaule – et à leurs contextes culturels respectifs. La perspective principale de ces travaux, dus à des chercheurs de diverses origines, est celle d'une approche historique générale, abordant divers aspects : la vie culturelle et littéraire en Asie, en particulier en Smyrne ; le plurilinguisme dans l'empire romain ; l'attrait de Rome pour les savants, philosophes et rhéteurs d'origine grecque ; l'expansion de Lyon au IIe siècle et l'épanouissement de sa vie économique et culturelle.
