Denis Feeney is one of the most distinguished scholars of Latin literature and Roman culture in the world of the last half-century. These two volumes conveniently collect and present afresh all his major papers, covering a wide range of topics and interests. Ancient epic is a major focus, followed by Latin lyric, historiography and elegy. Ancient literary criticism and the technology of the book are recurrent themes. Many papers address the problems of literary responses to religion and ritual, with an interdisciplinary methodology drawing on comparative anthropology and religion. The transition from Republic to Empire and the emergence of the Augustan principate form the background to the majority of the papers, and the question of how literary texts are to be read in historical context is addressed throughout. The critical edition of Aristotle's longest and most important zoological work as it was read in the Latin Middle Ages, complete and with exhaustive bilingual indices of the rich vocabulary.
This book forms the complement to the first volume published in 2000. The preface contains some remarks about the transmission of the text as a supplement to the first volume. Then follow the critical edition of books VI-X, and the indices for the whole text. The complete edition gives access to the longest and most important work from Aristotle's zoology, De historia animalium, in the Latin translation by William of Moerbeke. This version was part of the standard university curriculum in the late-medieval West. The bilingual indices give access to the richness of the translator's vocabulary and provide an indispensable tool for the study of his translation method. Except for De partibus animalium, all of Moerbeke's translations from the Aristotelian zoological corpus are now available in critical editions.

Kritische Edition einer spätmittelalterlichen Exempelsammlung

Die Compilatio singularis exemplorum ist eine Exempelsammlung, die gegen Ende des 13. Jahrhundert von einem anonymen französischen Dominikaner zusammengestellt wurde. Sie enthält neben vielen auch anderweitig breit und variantenreich überlieferten Stoffen einiges sonst nur selten erhaltene oder gänzlich unbekannte Erzählgut. Zudem hebt sie sich von den meisten anderen Exempelsammlungen durch das ihr zugrundeliegende Gliederungsprinzip ab, welches sich an der Dreiteilung der mittelalterlichen Christenheit in Säkularklerus, Regularklerus und Laienstand orientiert: Streng hierarchisch geordnet, werden der Reihe nach Geschichten über die Mitglieder dieser drei Stände erzählt. Von den Päpsten bis hinab zu den Theologiestudenten, von den Äbten und Abtissinnen bis hinab zu den Laienbrüdern und Beginen, von den Kaisern und Königen bis hinab zu den gesellschaftlichen Randexistenzen wird vor uns das ganze Panoptikum der spätmittelalterlichen Gesellschaft entfaltet. Dem so entworfenen Abbild der Menschenwelt werden in den ersten Teilen der Sammlung eine Marienvita, zahlreiche Marienmirakel, Hostienwunder, Kreuzzugsgeschichte und einige Geschichten über die Engel vorangestellt. Lediglich der letzte, vermutlich sekundär hinzugefügte Teil der Sammlung weicht von der Gesamtkonzeption des Werkes ab. Er vereint in sich eine Liste altfranzösischer Sprichwörter nebst deren lateinischen Nachdichtungen, Proben der Vagantenpoesie des Hugo Primas und weitere Verse erbaulichen und unterhaltsamen Inhalts.
Der lateinische Text der Sammlung ist stellenweise von altfranzösischen Einsprengseln durchsetzt, die in einigen Fällen das Ausmaß kleinerer Gedichte erreichen. Er wird hier zum ersten Mal vollständig nach allen drei bekannten Überlieferungsträgern, Handschriften des 14. und 15. Jahrhunderts, kritisch herausgegeben.

This book is the first exhaustive study of one of the fundamental theory for medieval science: the theory of celestial influence. The analysis of the Sentences commentaries reveals different conceptions of celestial causality and shows the interactions between secular and Christian cosmologies.

Pour la totalité des savants médiévaux, les sphères et astres causent de multiples phénomènes terrestres, des événements météorologiques jusqu'aux changements dans le corps humain. Mais qu'en disent les théologiens ? Ce livre propose la première reconstitution de la théorie de l'influence céleste à partir d'une analyse exhaustive du corpus des commentaires des Sentences (v. 1220-v. 1340). Non seulement ces auteurs adhèrent à la doctrine de la causalité céleste, mais aussi ils prônent une approche originale. D'une part, ils traitent de l'influence « ordinaire », celle des corps supérieurs connus des astronomes : son étendue, ses mécanismes, ses limites. D'autre part, ils dépeignent une influence « hors normes », celle des sphères, des planètes et des étoiles dont l'existence est postulée par la foi chrétienne : le ciel empyrée, demeure des bienheureux, ou les corps célestes métamorphosés par l'Apocalypse. Dotés, à première vue, de propriétés contraires à l'ordre naturel, ces cieux sont néanmoins décrits avec la philosophie naturelle aristotélicienne. La théologie s'adapte donc à la science, mais en renouvelant cette dernière : en englobant le cas des cieux « atypiques », la théorie de l'influence céleste en ressort profondément modifiée. Il s'agit d'une clé pour comprendre l'innovation du savoir scientifique médiéval et, peut-être, pour penser les évolutions scientifiques ultérieures.
