Eine Chronik ist mehr als eine parataktische Aneinanderreihung von Fakten. Sie erzählt auch eine Geschichte. Dies zeigt exemplarisch die Untersuchung der bisher wenig beachteten spätantiken Chronik des nordafrikanischen Bischofs Victor von Tunnuna (ca. 565). Er berichtet für die Jahre nach dem Konzil von Chalcedon (451) und dem 2. Konzil von Konstantinopel (553) mit einem regionalen Schwerpunkt auf Nordafrika von den Geschehnissen rund um den sogenannten Drei-Kapitel-Streit. Eine Analyse der Auswahl und Gestaltung der Einzelbeiträge in der Chronik verdeutlicht, inwiefern Victor von Tunnuna mit der Geschichte der Gruppe der wenigen verbleibenden Verteidiger der Drei Kapitel die Geschichte der Märtyrer und Bekenner unter den Vandalen fortschreibt und sie als Vergangenheit seiner eigenen Gruppe in Anspruch nimmt. Die Analyse erwächst aus der Untersuchung und Neubewertung der Geschichte des Chroniktextes, die vor allem den spanischen Überlieferungskontext in den Blick nimmt.

Why, when, and how did speakers of ancient Greek borrow words from Latin? Which words did they borrow? Who used Latin loanwords, and how? Who avoided them, and why? How many words were borrowed, and what kind of word? How long did the loanwords survive? Until now, attempts to answer such questions have been based on incomplete and often misleading evidence, but this study offers the first comprehensive collection of evidence from papyri, inscriptions, and literature from the fifth century BC to the sixth century AD. That collection – included in the book as a lexicon of Latin loanwords – is examined using insights from linguistic work on modern languages to provide new answers that often differ strikingly from earlier ones. The analysis is accessibly presented, and the lexicon offers a firm foundation for future work in this area.

The cult of saints is one of the most fascinating religious developments of Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages. Christians admired martyrs already in the second century, but for a long time they perceived them only as examples to follow and believed they could pray directly to God, whom they addressed as ‘Our Father'. A new attitude toward saints, now considered above all as powerful friends of God and efficient intercessors, started to emerge in the third century. Once this process gained momentum in the Constantinian era, the cult of saints constantly changed and rapidly adapted to new conditions and demands. This evolution highlighted many factors: the popularity of specific saints and the different types of sanctity, the spread of cults and customs, and the ways in which the saints were described, visualised, and represented.
